At Michigan Health and Wellness our approach is always based in functional medicine.

But what is functional medicine really?

Functional medicine is a holistic approach to healthcare that focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of illness, rather than just treating symptoms. It emphasizes the importance of lifestyle factors such as nutrition, exercise, stress management, and sleep in achieving optimal health. But one of the most important factors of functional medicine is nutrition which research shows is one of the best tools we have for preventing and treating chronic diseases.

The food we eat has a direct impact on our health. It provides the building blocks for all the cells and tissues in our body, and also influences our immune system, hormone balance, and overall inflammation levels. A diet high in processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats can lead to chronic inflammation, which is linked to many chronic diseases including heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. On the other hand, a diet rich in whole, nutrient-dense foods can help reduce inflammation, support the immune system, and promote optimal health.

Our Approach to Functional Nutrition

At Michigan Health and Wellness we use nutrition as a key component of our treatment plans. We work with patients to identify any nutrient deficiencies, food sensitivities, or other dietary factors that may be contributing to their health issues. We may also recommend specific dietary protocols, such as a low-inflammatory diet or work to eliminate different foods from your diet based on comprehensive food sensitivity testing, to help reduce inflammation and improve overall health.

We believe that every person is unique, with different nutritional needs, genetic makeup, and health challenges. We work closely with each of our patients to develop individualized nutrition plans that take into account these factors.

When we develop a functional nutrition plan for you we will teach you the importance of a whole foods-based diet. This means eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats, while minimizing processed and packaged foods. Whole foods are rich in essential nutrients, fiber, and antioxidants that are essential for optimal health. They also tend to be lower in calories and higher in satiety than processed foods, which can help with weight management and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

We may also recommend specific supplements or nutraceuticals to address nutrient deficiencies or support specific health goals. For example, omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, and vitamin D are commonly recommended for their anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. Probiotics and digestive enzymes may be recommended to improve gut health, which is closely linked to overall health and wellness.

In addition to addressing nutrient deficiencies, we will teach you how you can reduce  your daily exposure to toxins and other environmental factors that can impact health. This may include recommendations to choose organic and non-GMO foods, avoid plastics and other toxic chemicals, and reduce exposure to environmental toxins such as air pollution.

Most importantly, functional medicine nutrition is not just about treating illness, but also about promoting optimal health and wellness. By addressing the root causes of health issues and supporting the body’s natural healing processes, functional medicine can help people achieve better health outcomes and improve their quality of life. Whether you are struggling with chronic illness or simply looking to optimize your health, functional nutrition can be a powerful tool in achieving your health goals.
